The Washington Huskies and the North Carolina Tar Heels meet in an NCAA tournament second round matchup in college basketball action from the Nationwide Arena on Sunday.

The Washington Huskies punched their ticket to the second round after earning a 78-61 win over Utah State in the first round last time out. Noah Dickerson led the Huskies with 20 points on 7 of 13 shooting with 12 rebounds for the double-double while Jaylen Nowell came right behind with 19 points and a team-high 5 assists. Nahziah Carter chipped in 13 points with 4 assists and Matisse Thybulle added 10 points with 5 steals and 3 blocks to round out the group of double-digit scorers for Washington in the win. Nowell leads Washington in scoring and assists with 16.3 points and 3.2 assists per game while Dickerson leads the Huskies in rebounding with 7.5 rebounds per game this season. As a team, Washington is averaging 70.1 points per game on 45.4% shooting from the field, 35.2% from behind the 3-point line and 70% from the foul line this season.

The North Carolina Tar Heels come into the second round after taking out 16-seed Iona by a final score of 88-73. Cameron Johnson led the Tar Heels with 23 points on 7 of 13 shooting with 4 threes and 7 rebounds while Nassir Little added 19 points and Luke Maye chipped in 16 points with a team-high 9 reboudns. Garrison Brooks and Coby White each had 10 points to finish off the group of double-digit scorers for UNC in the winning effort. Johnson leads North Carolina in scoring with an average of 16.9 points per game while White leads the Tar Heels in assists with 4.2 assists per game and Maye leads UNC in rebounding by averaging a double-double per game with 14.7 points to go along with his team-leading 10.5 rebounds per game this season. As a team, North Carolina is averaging the 3rd-most points per game in D-I this season, scoring 86.1 points per game on 46.4% shooting from the field, 36.5% from behind the arc and 74.2% from the foul line this season.

North Carolina is rightfully favored here as I think that the Tar Heels are the better team between the two sides. However, North Carolina has been playing some close games lately, and actually trailed at the half against Iona. UNC would’ve been in a lot more trouble had Iona not been so heavily reliant on the 3-pointer to try to keep the game close. Washington has the talent to go toe-to-toe with North Carolina and are the better team defensively. I think Washington is more than capable of keeping this one within single digits, so I’ll take the Huskies and the points in this one.
